Coach’s Tip of the Week

From now through September, our Saturday workouts will begin at 7 AM.  This is to avoid the worst heat and humidity during the Summer months.  It may be difficult to get up and out the door so early on a weekend morning, but your body will thank you for finishing the workout before the heat of the day.

July 10, 2010 Long Run from Peirce Mill

At 7:00 AM on Saturday, July 10th, we will run 12 miles (3 for new half marathoners) on the Rock Creek Trail and Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park. The start and finish location is Peirce Mill (there are four parking lots there; see the maps on our Training Locations and Maps page; you can also park on Shoemaker St and Spring of Freedom Lane near the embassies).

We will start by heading 2 miles south AROUND (not THROUGH) the tunnel past the National Zoo where we will turn back (turn point will be marked on the trail and I should be there on my bike). When we get back to Peirce Mill, most runners will continue on the trail and then on Beach Drive as we did in late May. Marathoners will go 4 miles until Wise Road (at the top of the hill where the gates are closed; Wise Road has motor vehicle traffic) and then turn around at the Wise Road gate and then retrace their steps to Peirce Mill.

[New half marathoners will turn back at the Zoo and finish at Peirce Mill]

Hydration and Nutrition

At last weekend’s long run, Nutritionist Rebecca Scritchfield gave a seminar.  Here are links to her nutrition blog and an article she wrote about proper hydration.

Remember: all runners on MCC training runs should be carrying fluids with them.
